News: Celluon Laserkey - Laser Keyboard Available

Celluon has started selling its Laserkey CL800BT in Europe. The laser projected keyboard connects to the PDA using BlueTooth or serial. Thusfar compatible with the Zire 72, Tungsten T2, T3,T5, TE2 and Treo 650.

Laser projected keyboards were first demonstrated two years ago (see Virtual Keyboard), but only have recently hit the market. iTech was the first to license the technology and produce a product. Now Cellulon has followed, releasing its product on the German and Swiss market. Compatible with PalmOS. One reseller mentions PalmOS 5.2.8 and 5.4.5, another (www.widget.de) mentions T2, T3, T5, TE2, Zire 72 and Treo 650. (text amended 10:45 GMT, 4 May)

Seems like a good idea when taken at face value, but I winder what the typing experience will feel like. With keys that don't travel and can't be felt, I'd imagine using this k/b would be a nightmare.

I hear 'ya! Also, the projection unit seems quite large... could be more awkward to carry than a nice folding keyboard. But its SO high-tech that its still pretty cool. ;-)

I've just used one at CommunicAsia '05 here in Singapore. It was excellent I was able to type as I normally do and at the speed I normally do. The lack of tactile responce from the desktop I was typing on didn't put me off.

I'm off to SimLim square now to try and pick myself up one.
