I just got a new E2 from palm one today. It is my third palm os product.

When i tried to install the included software- i got the following error:

Error number 0x80040702
Description: Failed to load dll:HSAPI

I got this again and again- in both cd drives.

I have a 4 month old dell 8400 P4, win XP pro

I first tried the online help- but i ironically got an error..

Then I managed to get through to tech support- obviously off-shore.

The person, who i could barely understand, basically had NO idea what was going on. He offered to send a new CD in 5-7 business days (there is a reason why I wanted the machine overnight) now i can't use my my E2 until then.

He was basically completely unhelpful and- to top it off- would NOT let me speak to his supervisor! (kept changing the subject)

Can anyone help with this error?

Anyone know where i could file a formal complaint?

thanks so much

So I called tech support back today and again asked to speak to a supervisor and they hung up on me!

I am strongly considering sending this back and getting a windows machine.

Sorry about all the trouble you are having. Palm's tech support has really gone down hill since they went public and outsourced it. The T|E2 is too new also for anyone to have worked through the bugs. There are a few knowledge base articles already on palmOne's support site, but none related to the install itself not working.

They have a note there that says "Note: Palm Desktop software is not currently available as a web download for Tungsten E2 handhelds. Please use the CD installer." So this means the T|E2 has yet another version of Hotsync/Palm Desktop.

Can you tell where in the install process it crashes? Are there *any* remnants of installed files your PC at that point? Like is Hotsync installed and Palm Desktop, but maybe the VersaMail conduit isn't there?

BTW, Microsoft's ActiveSync is still worse than Palm's Hotsync. After all these years, its still a terrible kludge. It does install properly, though, but its prone to not working on a regular basis.

Thanks for your help. Tim.
It crashes right at the beginning.
Nothing is installed, as far as I can tell. My old version 3.0.1 pam desktop is there
I also tried to install on my work laptop- crashed too.

(BTW- can i hotsynch to 2 computers?)

I posted my troubles on the palmone site and I did get back a helpful message suggesting that it was probably a corrupt cd-rom
He also suggested that I update drivers. I updated my video card driver- no help. Do CD RW drives have drivers?

thanks again

*waiting for new CD*

I've never heard of a corrupted CD. If palmOne themselves told you that and are sending a new one, then what they must know is that the T|E2 Hotsync version on the CD they sent out has bugs in it. A "corrupt CD" wouldn't be able to be read at all. An installation crashing on a file not found is a problem with the install software they burned on the CD itself. I hope the CD they send you has updated software on it and therefore works, because they don't have the T|E2 software available for download on their site. This whole issue seems odd.

Also, yes you can sync to 2 different computers. It will take a little longer on the second one because it has more changed records to check, but it works just fine.

IT IS FOR THE PALM T2...

They are so stupid I am beside myself.

I tried to install it anyway-

I get the 'cannot connect...." error message when I try to hotsynch

I am beyond furious with palmone

here's some salt into the wound:

After calling tech support and waiting for 20 minutes- the line rang and I was cut off.

I think i've had enough of this company

Just wanted to add a post saying I'm having this exact problem as well. I just got a brand new Treo 650 and I'm trying to load the s/w on my HP Laptop. Same error, same spot. I just wanted you to know you're not along. Smile

so i figured out the problem

i had to uninstall my old palm desktop before installing the new one

4 different tech support 'specialists' could not figure this out.

Are you serious? Obviously, you don't have much experience with ActiveSync. While it is not perfect, ActiveSync is quite stable and provides a extremely usable experience. I am not quite sure what you mean by kludge? Is that similar to not being able to tell if a previous version of the software is installed and automatically uninstalling it?

Yeah, I'm serious. I have several different PDA's, two Palms and a PocketPC these days. ActiveSync is constantly crashing when syncing my Outlook Inbox. In fact, it can't even open up the folder list in the mail sync options at all. Its probably some bug in Outlook SP2 when using A/S. It also can't sync "My Documents" half the time either. Even a soft-reset before a sync doesn't always fix it. It also doesn't work well with Notes when trying to move (re-categorize) them.

I'm not trying to say its unusable. I just don't want people to think that just because they have issues with Hotsync that buying a PocketPC and using ActiveSync is going to be any better.

My old PalmV quit working altogether so I bought a TE2. I got the same error message "failed to load" dll:hsapi when trying to load the software from the CD. If I uninstall the old Palm desktop (v 3.0.1) software before loading new software from the CD won't I lose all my calendar and contact info stored on my PC?
